Energy Saving Rebates and Programs

LELWD offers a Home Energy Assessment to help customers save energy in their homes. LELWD supports a two-tiered approach to energy conservation. LELWD’s Energy Services department is always available by phone to answer your questions about energy efficiency or conservation. Additionally, if you are unable to have your questions answered through the above means, then LELWD will be happy to provide you with a complimentary energy assessment.

Schedule a Home Energy Assessment online or by calling ENE at 888-772-4242.

WHAT TO EXPECT
LELWD will send a professional energy advisor to your home to evaluate your energy saving potential in specific areas of your home. The advisor will provide useful information and tips on appliance usage, air sealing, and insulation. The advisor will give you a computerized report detailing recommendations and payback time for any improvements suggested as well. The entire assessment usually takes about 1 – 1.5 hours to complete.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR ASSESSMENT
Be prepared to answer some of the following questions to help the advisor in their work:

  • Is anyone home during working hours?
  • What is the average thermostat setting for summer and winter?
  • How many people live here?
  • Is every room in use?

LELWD is pleased to offer appliance rebates to customers purchasing Energy Star-certified refrigerators, clothes washers, electric clothes dryers, and room air conditioners. To participate in LELWD’s rebate program, you must purchase an Energy Star-certified appliance, retain your receipt for proof of purchase, and provide documentation of the appliance’s brand, model number, and Energy Star certification.

Make sure you purchase Energy Star-certified products. These appliances are significantly more energy-efficient than the average comparable model, and all major brands have a selection that are Energy Star certified. The easiest way to verify that an appliance is ENERGY STAR-certified is to examine the yellow Energy Guide label that manufacturers must attach to the majority of appliances. The Energy Star logo will usually appear on the bottom-right corner. If you buy online, look for an Energy Guide link or click on the product’s detailed description. Another way to verify Energy Star certification is to visit the Energy Star online product search, select type of appliance, brand, and model number. If you have limited access to a computer, please call Energy New England before purchasing for help verifying appliance eligibility at 888-772-4242.

Once you purchase an Energy Star-certified appliance, fill out a rebate appliance application either online via LELWD’s online application portal or by downloading the Energy Star Appliance Rebate Application. You may also stop by LELWD’s offices to pick up a paper application. Before submitting your application, you will need to include a paper copy or scanned pictures of your sales receipt and the yellow Energy Guide label. As mentioned above, the yellow Energy Guide label provides documentation of the appliance’s brand, make, model and Energy Guide certification.

You may submit your application in several ways. If you use LELWD’s online Appliance Application, it will automatically be sent to Energy New England. If you choose to submit the printable application, you  may either mail to:

What is a Central Air Conditioning (AC) System? As opposed to ductless, window-based units, Central AC units operate from a central location, moving the cool air throughout the house through a series of supply and return ducts. They are often conveniently controlled through the household thermostat, but must be installed correctly (with proper duct sealing, airflow measurements, and proper sizing for the space) in order to operate efficiently.

What is an Air Source Heat Pump? Heat pumps can provide cost-effective and energy-efficient heating and cooling for homes. While traditional systems burn fuel to create heat, a heat pump instead works by moving heat into or out of a home. Though they require electricity to operate, efficient heat pumps can provide the same amount of heating for a third of the electricity needed for traditional electric heating.

Heat pumps circulate a liquid, called a refrigerant, between an indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor radiator. When heating a home, the heat pump heats the liquid by pressurizing it, pumping it from outdoors inside, and then circulating it through the home’s heating system. After the liquid transfers the heat into the building it is depressurized and cooled. The liquid then travels to the outdoor radiator where the ambient temperature warms the refrigerant and the process begins again. Heat pumps can also be used to cool homes through a similar process. In this case, the warm air inside a home or building is cooled by the liquid, which has been depressurized. The refrigerant is then sent outside and pressurized, which heats it up, and the ambient outdoor temperature cools it.

Air-source heat pumps use the temperatures of the outdoor air to heat or cool homes. Advancements in technology over the past few years have made air-source heat pumps an efficient source of heating and cooling in cold climates like Massachusetts. Models on the market today can operate efficiently even when it is below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Much like air conditioners, air-source heat pumps can be installed either as central units or split units. Central units utilize a building’s heat distribution system to heat and cool a home. Split units typically provide heating and cooling to just one area of a home, reducing demand on the existing heating system.

What is a Mini-Split Heat Pump? A mini-split system is composed of two components: an outdoor condensing unit and one or more indoor air handling units that are connected by a conduit through your wall. They usually have no ducts, but can sometimes have a short duct system. Mini-split heat pumps can produce cooling for the summer months and heating in the winter months.

What is a Heat Pump Water Heater? A heat pump is a device that moves heat from one place to another. It works much like an air conditioner or a refrigerator. While a refrigerator moves heat from your fridge to your kitchen, a heat pump water heater moves heat from your home into the hot water tank.

Is a heat pump water heater right for me? While heat pump water heaters can certainly provide savings over standard electric water heaters, there are several other factors to consider before buying and installing:

  • Location: For a heat pump water heater to run efficiently, the space should generally stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Space: A heat pump removes heat from ambient air. Therefore, there must be a considerable volume of air available for them to work. Most manufacturers recommend about 750 cubic feet.  Heat pump water heaters often require larger clearances from walls so that air can circulate properly, and they are often taller and heavier that standard water heaters. Most closets – even with louvered door – are not appropriate for heat pump water heaters.

Eligibility: This program offers rebates for residential customers who have a licensed plumber install a qualified heat pump water heater. Customers in the Littleton Electric Light Department (LELD) service area are eligible for rebates subject to the availability of funds from LELD. LELD reserves the right to change any portion of this program or end this program at any time without notice.

Qualifying Purchases: Heat pump water heaters must be ENERGY STAR certified, have an energy factor of 2.3 or greater, have a first hour rating of 60 gallons or higher, and come with a 10 year warranty.

Rebate amounts and payments: Rebates will be for $250 per installation. Rebate applications will be processed as they are received and distributed by Energy New England in the form of a check.

Verification: A copy of original sales receipt indicating make, model, purchase date, purchase location, and price must accompany the rebate application. Incomplete applications will delay rebate dispersement.
