Energy Saving Rebates and Programs
MGED is pleased to offer rebates to customers purchasing selected energy efficient ENERGY STAR appliances. ENERGY STAR appliances have been identified as being significantly more energy efficient than the average comparable model.
Energy New England (ENE) provides conservation services for the residential customers of its partnering utilities. ENE’s highly trained and experienced Residential Energy Advisors can examine your home and identify heating, lighting, and weatherization opportunities to be more efficient and save money on your utility bills.
MGED is pleased to assist customers making energy efficiency improvements to their home. Learn what measures make sense for your home by calling Energy New England (ENE) at 888‐772‐4242. Schedule a free Home Energy Assessment, and after it’s done you’ll be provided with a list of energy saving recommendations. Complete any of the qualifying recommendations, and you’ll receive a bill credit for half of the cost. The credit is up to $500 for most measures and up to $1,000 for insulation! To be eligible for the 2019 MGED Weatherization Rebates :
- All qualifying measures must be recommended by a recent MGED/ENE Energy Assessment before installation.
- Work must be started and completed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2019 for this rebate cycle. Work completed in the following year will be eligible for that year’s rebate offering if available.
- Qualifying measures must be listed on the assessment report and include:
- Insulation (attic, ventilation, wall, basement, and rim joist)
- Air sealing measures (caulking, weatherstripping, gaskets, etc.)
- Heating system pipe and duct insulation
- Work can be done by the homeowner, a contractor, or a combination of the two. Where applicable, the contractor must be licensed for the work performed.
- The rebate will be a credit on your bill of up to 50% of the total job cost (including materials and labor) or $500 – whichever is less. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing. Limit one home-efficiency rebate per customer per calendar year. Multi-family homeowners may apply per unit, up to 4 units.
- Each application must include the original sales receipt, product information, and/or the final invoice from any contracted work with detailed specifications of the work performed. Proof of payment is also required.
All work will be inspected by a qualified technician to verify correct installation for maximum energy savings. MGED reserves the right to have department personnel inspect installations.

MGED Drives Electric is a local initiative designed to raise awareness about the benefits of replacing gasoline powered vehicles with EVs. Customers in MGED’s service territory are encouraged to test drive and experience the speed and power of EVs first hand. MGED’s community shared solar program, Solar Community, allows customers to support locally produced clean energy regardless of if they aren’t able or don’t want to install solar panels on their home or business. Solar Community gives MGED’s customers the opportunity to share in the benefits of a large solar system installed within MGED’s service territory.
Participating customers share in both the costs and the benefits associated with Solar Community. MGED customers enrolled in the program pay a monthly fee for costs associated with the program. Starting in the second year, participating customers are expected to begin receiving credits on their bill.

For customers who generate their own electricity using small-scale solar energy systems known as solar arrays, net metering measures both the electricity you buy from MGED and the excess electricity you produce using your own energy system that is sent back through the department’s meter. Net metering means that MGED’s meter will record both amounts, and you will be billed for the “net” amount or the difference between what was delivered by and sent to MGED. MGED will not meter the total amount produced by your energy system, most of which will be used inside your home.
For example, if a customer with a 2,000 Watt solar array generates 300 kWh in July but only uses 200 kWh during those solar production hours, then 100 kWh will be sent backward through the meter to MGED lines. If that customer also uses 600 kWh from MGED (forward through the meter) in their home that month when more power was needed (i.e. in the evening), then the bill will show charges for 600 kWh and a credit for the excess 100 kWh at the wholesale energy value.

MGED currently offers commercial customer interconnection of renewable generation systems as a 100% buyback of power generated at market costs. The buyback, in the form of a billing credit, is for systems sized over 10 kilowatts (DC).
For those customers requesting interconnection for medium-sized (10 kW < 100 kW) systems, please read MGED’s Guide for Renewable Distributed Generation.

MGED business customers can request a walk-through, on-site evaluation of energy use, free-of-charge. This base-level technical report will help identify the highest level priority measures that should be addressed by your businesses’ energy reduction plan.
MGED incentives can and will change from year to year, but your businesses’ energy use and measures to reduce that use should be a part of your ongoing facilities management. MGED will review the request, and ENE will call directly to schedule the evaluation.
MGDE offers commercial customers financial incentives to replace inefficient light fixtures and bulbs with energy-saving products and devices. Rebates are available on a range of eligible lighting equipment for every kind of business.
- Small Commercial accounts (to 199 kW) – $2,000
- Medium Commercial & Industrial accounts (200 Kw – 500 kW) – $5,000
- Large Commercial & Industrial accounts (>500 kW) – $10,000
